The program is meant to diversify women to be independent and to bring out their hidden skills & ability to do something. We realized that the poverty level in Cameroon is very high especially with the women in the rural areas.
This is because of the high dropout rate from school, teenage pregnancy and the belief that most women need only to live as housewives. Lack of funds to start a skill also hinders these hardworking women. It is on this note that this program has been initiated to train women and young people without a skill in the following activities to help build their capacity:
a) Fashion & designing (sewing)
b) Batik tie & die clothing
c) Hair dressing
d) Arts & craft
e) Tailoring
f) Fairtrade
g) Farming
We have to also keep in mind that the focus is not on women alone but also on those youth deprived of better living standards. Volunteers normally complete the program to empower deprived people so as to reduce the level of poverty and therefore enhance their livelihood. This program assists women and young people to learn a skill/trade in different ways financially and morally. We again assist them find market for their finished product.
Why this program and the need for volunteers/interns/sponsors?
Most of the women we are supporting are from villages and from very poor background. They therefore need assistance and support to have self confidence and hope for better future. We want them to focus on the opportunities around them and this is to avoid rural exodus that Cameroon is victim. People and mostly illiterate women go from villages to towns as Yaounde and Douala, hoping for better life conditions, but once there, as they aren’t skilled, accessing job become problematic and they fail in prostitution.
